Born in Kolma Baraha Chaur, Syangja, Inspector (Retd) Dhurba Bahadur Gurung began his career with the Singapore Police Force and pursued night school, earning his GCE O-Level and completing fleet management training. After a distinguished 28-year career, he retired as Inspector II in 1992. Post-retirement, he ventured into tourism and construction but soon turned to community service. He served the Singapore Gurkha Police Pensioners’ Association as Vice President and President, where he is now an advisor. Gurung contributed extensively to Nepal’s Squash Rackets Association at different forefront leadership, including as a founder and first President of the Nepal Sepaktakraw Association, which led to his election as Vice President of the International Sepaktakraw Federation, a medal-winning sport for Nepal. Dr. Tshampa Lama

Dr. Tshampa Megi Lama, a prominent figure in the Gurung and Buddhist world from Sikkim, India, was born on December 12, 1978, in Sang, East Sikkim. After completing his 12th grade, he pursued a course in Motor Machinery Engineering at ITI Tung. However, in 1996, he shifted his focus towards spirituality and social service, beginning an intensive study of Buddhism, which led him to become a Buddhist Lama. From July 10, 1998, to November 16, 2001, Dr. Tshampa Lama undertook a transformative three-year, three-month, three-week, and three-day retreat (Tsham) at the divine institutions of Kabji Jadral Sangye Dorji Rinpoche at the Tashi Choeling Monastery in Darjeeling. This retreat marked his emergence as Tshampa Lama, the first person from the Indian Gurung community to attain this esteemed title. Dr. Tshampa Lama’s pursuit of knowledge continued with remarkable academic achievements. In 2010, he graduated with first-class honours in Shastri (B.A. in Buddhist Philosophy) from Sampurnanand Sanskrit University in Varanasi. In 2012, he earned a first-class degree in Pali (Ancient Buddhist Language) and was conferred the title of Acharya, becoming the first Acharya from the Indian Gurung community to study Buddhist philosophy. He furthered his studies with a Master’s in Indian Philosophy and Religion from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in 2013, followed by a degree in Philosophy from Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth in 2014, both with first-class honours. In 2018, Dr. Tshampa Lama completed his Ph.D. at BHU, receiving his doctorate in 2019 with his dissertation titled “A Philosophical Study of ‘Tripitakas’: with Special Reference to Social Morality.” His research made him the first scholar from Sikkim, North Bengal, and Northeast India to delve into the core Buddhist scriptures the Tripitakas. Dr. Tshampa Lama’s contributions extend far beyond academia. Since 1996, he has published many books and numerous research articles and delivered 31 presentations at various seminars, workshops, and training courses. His works have played a crucial role in advancing the understanding of Buddhist philosophy, social ethics, and the rich history and culture of the Gurung community. Notable among his publications are the books The Gurung: Their Hidden History, Dhee, Kalpa, and Tamu Kai along with articles such as Renjong Denjong Dekhi Sikkim Samma, A Brief History of the Gurungs, The Ethics of Tripitakas, The Historical Era of Tripitakas, The Four Noble Truths, and Identical Values of Gurung. His writings have been instrumental in preserving the history, culture, and traditions of the Gurung people, while simultaneously promoting the global spread of Buddhist teachings. In addition to his scholarly and literary contributions, Dr. Tshampa Lama has been a respected spiritual guide and teacher for Buddhist communities worldwide. Since 1997, he has been actively involved with the Gurung community and several organizations, notably his leadership role in the We Foundation. Dr. Tshampa Lama currently serves as the Deputy President of the International Council of Gurung Buddhism, headquartered in the USA, as the Chief Advisor to the All India Gurung (Tamu) Buddhist Association, and All India Buddhist Forum. Lt. Narayan Gurung

Lt. Narayan Prasad Gurung Sahib is a person of deep faith in Dharma, Karma, and society; he was born in 1954 in Parbat District, Nepal, as the eldest son of the late Tula Gurung and the late Ram Pati Gurung. After completing the SLC, he served 10 months as a volunteer teacher at the local school in his village. In 1972, at 18, he enlisted at the British Camp in Paklihawa, underwent military training in Hong Kong, and served 24 years in the British Army. For his outstanding service, he was honored with the British Empire Medal (BEM) and retired with the rank of Lieutenant. With his spouse, Mrs. Yuva Kumari Gurung, they are blessed with two sons and two daughters who reside in Feltham, London. After retiring from the military, he served for the Tamu Buddhist Service Committee and as a Security Supervisor in Hong Kong for two years. Following this, he worked for more than six years as a Senior Officer in the Abu Dhabi Police Force in the UAE, during which time he served as an advisor to the UAE Nepalese Society and as the President of the Tamu Society UAE. In 2006, during the migration of ex-Gurkhas to the UK, Lt. Gurung moved to London with his family. Recognizing the importance of community, he became a life member of Tamu Dhi UK the same year. In 2007, following the establishment of the Tamu Dhi London Unit, he was appointed as an advisor. Additionally, as the founding President of the Charbhanjang Tamu Society, he played a key role in integrating the society into Tamu Dhi UK. He served Tamu Dhi UK, Tamu Dhi London Unit, NRN UK, Parbat Welfare Society UK, Buddha Foundation UK, Nata Gota Manch UK, BGNA Brent, founding President of BCC UK London Branch. Lt. Anand Tamu, a resident of Kurseong, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India, is a prominent leader and visionary in the Gurung community. As the President of the All India Gurung (Tamu) Buddhist Association and the International Tamu Council (ITC), he has played a pivotal role in shaping and advancing the interests of the Gurung people. Khenpo Basanta Gurung, also known as Gyan Dorji, is a highly respected spiritual leader dedicated to the teachings of Buddhism. He serves as the Chief Monk of Baudha Samaj Colorado, USA, and the Kanchan Byoma Kussuma Swarnadip Gumba in Nepal. Sibaraj Ghondey Gurung is based in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, USA. He currently serves as the General Secretary of the USA chapter. Mr. Gurung has been very passionate about customs, traditions, rituals, culture, and religion since he was a child. He was curious, asking his ancestors about his heritage and his identity. He would actively participate in cultural activities as well and find joy in them. This early curiosity and involvement laid the foundation for his lifelong dedication to preserving and promoting the Gurung identity.
He was born in Samchi, Bhutan, and raised in Jhapa, Nepal, before moving to the United States. Over the past decade, he has dedicated himself to preserving Gurung culture in the U.S. by organizing events like Losar celebrations, Rodhi programs, traditional dances, and Buddhist rituals. As a General Secretary of the United Gurung Buddhist Organization of America (UGBOA), he strives to unite and grow the Gurung community while balancing his personal and professional life.
